Wild Women of Romania: An 8-day women-only journey through the Romanian Carpathians
In collaboration with Moyo Nature Travel
From European bison returning to the Țarcu Mountains to wildlife moving through the forests of the Făgăraș, this eight-day journey brings together two very different conservation landscapes in the Romanian Carpathians.
Designed for women and hosted by women, the trip combines hiking, wildlife tracking, local food and community experiences with the opportunity to meet people working to protect and restore Romania’s natural landscapes.

The first part takes place in western Romania, in the Țarcu Mountains and Hațeg region. Here, the focus is on European bison, rewilding and the relationship between nature conservation and local communities.
The journey then continues east into the Făgăraș Mountains, where Travel Carpathia joins the itinerary. Here, the focus shifts towards mountain wilderness, wildlife tracking and the conservation work of Foundation Conservation Carpathia.
Along the way, we’ll meet local women, conservationists, guides and entrepreneurs, hike through different mountain landscapes, share local meals and spend nights in places ranging from tiny houses to remote mountain camps and a wildlife hide.
The two itineraries connect directly on 16 September 2027, allowing you to experience both chapters as one continuous journey.
Day 1 – Into the Țarcu Mountains
We meet in Bucharest and begin the journey west towards Armeniș and the Țarcu Mountains. After the drive, we arrive at WeWilder Campus and settle into our tiny houses. In the afternoon, there is time for a gentle walk to a viewpoint overlooking the mountains and the landscape where European bison now roam again. There will also be time for some gentle movement or yoga before dinner. In the evening, we’ll hear more about the landscape, the return of European bison and the people working to make this part of Romania wilder again.
Day 2 – Bison and community
Today we head into the mountains to look for European bison. Together with a local female guide and tracker, we’ll follow tracks and other signs, learning more about bison behaviour and the ongoing rewilding programme in the Țarcu Mountains.
There is no guarantee that we’ll see bison – but searching for them gives us a different way of experiencing the landscape and understanding how the animals are returning to it.

Day 3 – From the Țarcu Mountains to Hațeg
After some gentle movement and breakfast, we leave Armeniș and continue towards the Hațeg region. Along the way, we’ll explore another landscape where rewilding is changing the relationship between people and nature.
We’ll meet local women and entrepreneurs connected to conservation and rewilding initiatives in the area and hear about their work and experiences.
Day 4 – Mountains, culture and connection
Today offers a choice between a full day in the mountains and a less strenuous cultural or creative experience. For those who want to hike, we head into the Retezat Mountains, with forests, mountain meadows and high-altitude landscapes providing the setting for a full day outdoors. Alternatively, you can take part in a cultural or creative experience with local women in the area.

For those continuing with the full adventure, we travel towards the Făgăraș Mountains. The landscape changes gradually as we cross Romania, moving from the Țarcu Mountains and the return of European bison towards the forests and wilderness of the Făgăraș.
Day 6 – Into the Făgăraș wilderness
Our Făgăraș journey begins in Rucăr, where we set off into the forest.
The first walk is a gentle introduction to the area. We follow a wide forest path for around an hour, looking for signs of wildlife and learning more about the animals and habitats of the Făgăraș.
We continue towards Poiana Tămaș Wilderness Camp, where we settle into our glamping-style tents overlooking the surrounding mountain ranges.
If time allows, we’ll stop at Bran for lunch and a short visit before continuing towards Rucăr.
Here, you’ll meet the female guide from Travel Carpathia who will accompany the group through the Făgăraș chapter.

Day 7 – Into the wild
Today is the main mountain hiking day. We follow a trail through the Făgăraș Mountains towards Pecineagu Dam, taking time along the way to look for signs of wildlife. Our guide will show us how tracks, feeding signs and other clues can reveal which animals are using the landscape.
Day 8 – Down from the mountains and into Transylvania
After breakfast, we leave Comisu and descend through the forest towards Canton Rudărița. The shorter hike gives us another opportunity to experience the Făgăraș landscape before we transfer to Equus Silvania.
After reaching the lake, we cross the water by electric raft and continue towards Comisu. The destination is a recently refurbished shepherd’s hut overlooking a meadow at the forest edge.
As evening approaches, we settle in and keep watch for wildlife.
