Wild Women of Romania – Făgăraș Mountains: A women-only journey through wilderness, wildlife and conservation
In collaboration with Moyo Nature Travel
Join us for four days in the Făgăraș Mountains, exploring wild mountain landscapes, learning about local wildlife and discovering the conservation work taking place across this part of the Southern Carpathians.
This women-only journey is hosted by Moyo Nature Travel, with a female host accompanying the group throughout the trip, and a female guide from the Travel Carpathia team leading the Făgăraș Mountains chapter.

The itinerary combines mountain hiking and wildlife tracking with an introduction to the work of Foundation Conservation Carpathia and the people involved in protecting and restoring the Făgăraș landscape.
You’ll spend time in remote mountain locations, learn how to recognise signs left by wildlife, meet women involved in conservation and local initiatives, and experience some of the region’s landscapes and food along the way.
The journey ends at Equus Silvania, where you can spend time with the horses and, if you wish, join an optional riding experience before returning to Bucharest.
You can join this itinerary independently or combine it with the 12–16 September 2027 West itinerary for the full eight-day Wild Women of Romania journey.
Day 1 – Into the Făgăraș wilderness
Our journey begins in Rucăr, Argeș, where you’ll meet the group, your female host and your female local guide before setting off towards the mountains.
The first hike offers a gentle introduction to the Făgăraș landscape. We follow a wide forest path for around an hour, keeping an eye out for signs of wildlife and learning more about the species that live in these forests.
Day 2 – Into the wild
Today is the main mountain hiking day of the journey. We set out along a trail through the Făgăraș Mountains towards Pecineagu Dam, with extensive mountain views along the way.
Our local guide will help us look for tracks, feeding signs and other clues left behind by wildlife. Depending on what we find, these may tell us about bears, wolves, deer, wild boar and some of the more elusive species living in the mountains.
We continue towards Poiana Tămaș Wilderness Camp, a remote mountain camp with views towards the Făgăraș, Iezer-Păpușa and Piatra Craiului ranges.
In the evening, we’ll meet women involved in Foundation Conservation Carpathia and learn more about the organisation’s work to protect and restore the landscape. As night falls, we gather around the campfire for a traditional meal and our first night in the mountains.

Once we reach the lake, we cross Pecineagu by electric raft and continue on foot towards Comisu. Our destination is a recently refurbished shepherd’s hut overlooking a meadow at the edge of the forest.
As dusk approaches, we settle in and keep watch for wildlife emerging from the forest. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but learning how to read the signs animals leave behind is an important part of understanding this landscape.

Day 3 – Down from the mountains and into Transylvania
After breakfast, we leave Comisu and begin our descent through the forest towards Canton Rudărița. The hike is considerably shorter than the previous day, giving us time to enjoy the mountain landscape before continuing towards Equus Silvania, a horse-riding and wilderness centre surrounded by the Transylvanian countryside. The afternoon is yours to choose.
Day 4 – Goodbye, for now
After breakfast, we say goodbye to the mountains and begin our transfer towards Bucharest Airport.
We expect to arrive at the airport in the early afternoon.
You can meet the horses and take part in an optional riding experience suited to your level, from a gentle hand-led experience to a guided ride through the countryside. Alternatively, stay on foot, explore the surrounding area or simply enjoy some time to relax.
In the evening, we come together for our final dinner and reflect on the experiences of the past few days – the mountains we’ve crossed, the wildlife signs we’ve discovered and the people we’ve met.
