Travel Carpathia: Wildlife Watching, Ecotourism and Conservation

About Travel Carpathia

Welcome to Travel Carpathia! An ecotourism programme developed by Foundation Conservation Carpathia that aims to promote conservation projects in the stunning Carpathian Mountains of Romania. We offer wildlife watching tours, wilderness expeditions, tailor-made itineraries and much more. By choosing us, you’re supporting the conservation work of the foundation. All of our profits go towards funding the foundation’s efforts to create Europe’s largest forest wilderness National Park in the Romanian Făgăraș Mountains. This will be a complete and self-sustaining ecosystem, which benefits nature and people whilst mitigating climate change.

Together, we aim to create a new, non-destructive economy for the benefit of biodiversity as well as the local communities. We’re developing Conservation Enterprise examples in and around the Făgăraș Mountains. We are working closely with the local residents in order to achieve this. Our ultimate goal is to establish a world-class protected wilderness in the Southern Romanian Carpathians. This will be an icon for conservation in Europe, and a new emblematic National Park that will benefit everyone.

The Carpathian Mountains form some of the largest contiguous forests in Europe. They are home to an extraordinarily high number of species, including many indigenous ones. Also here, you can find the largest European populations of large carnivores.

Unfortunately, in 2005, the restitution of formerly nationalised forests to private owners triggered massive clear-cuts on these lands. This poses a severe threat to the Carpathian ecosystemFoundation Conservation Carpathia was founded in 2009 by 12 philanthropists and conservationists. The foundation aims to stop this illegal logging and protect a significant surface of Carpathian forests, in the form of a completely protected area for future generations.

Cobor Biodiversity Farm

Discover the beauty of Cobor Biodiversity Farm, located in the heart of southern Transylvania, surrounded by beautiful meadows and pastures. This area boasts one of the last remaining ecologically intact areas in Europe, making it a haven for nature lovers. Whether you’re looking to explore the natural beauty of the area or seeking a warm and welcoming community, Cobor has something for everyone. Immerse yourself in the serene surroundings of meadows, pastures, and oak forests. All while enjoying the abundant birdlife and rare Transylvanian Grey Cattle.

In 2007, Markus F. Jebsen began acquiring agricultural land in and around Cobor. He purchased nearly 500 hectares of land that had been left unused by previous owners who had gone from the village. Additionally, he acquired several abandoned houses that had been deteriorating for over 20 years. One of these houses has been renovated into a charming guesthouse.

In 2016, Markus generously donated all of his land and houses, along with 1,000 hectares of forest in the Făgăraș Mountains, to Foundation Conservation Carpathia.

Between 2016 and 2018, the Swiss Temperatio Foundation awarded two grants to Foundation Conservation Carpathia to develop the land and houses into a functioning biodiversity farm. Today, this farm stands as a successful example of a Conservation Enterprise that balances community development with environmental preservation.

This 500-hectare farm offers high nature value grasslands, organic farming, and sustainable tourism. Stay in one of our charming guesthouses and enjoy delicious organic meals made with locally sourced ingredients. Explore the natural surroundings or participate in our activities.
